In the practice of Japa meditation - the repetition of a mantra as devotion and to help move into a meditative state - where a mala is used, fingers matter.
As Fil demonstrates in the image above, the mala drapes over the ring finger - the finger linked with earth energy - and is move by the the thumb - the digit related to fire energy. .
The thumb creates the ‘spark’ as you internally recite your mantra. This spark of intention becomes the flame of action and the mantra can work through us. The ring finger grounds us, and keeps us steady in our practice. .
The index finger stays out of the whole thing! Related to the ego, it’s important to keep this finger away from the mala whilst practising. If it’s possible, point it away from the body, but to keep it off the beads is the most important thing.
It can take practice but becomes second nature, to pick up my beads and automatically start rolling them through my fingers. Tactile and brimming with that energy that takes us back to the place where it all started.
Have a beautiful day, gorgeous one, Helen x
